ポンペイ（ポナペ）島は、北緯6度54分、東経158度14分の西太平洋ミクロネシア連邦ポンペイ州にあり、連邦首都であるパリキールを持つ最大の島です。州都は空港傍にあるコロニアになります。

Pohnpei (formally known as Ponape) is one of the Caroline Islands in Western Pacific (geographical coordinate 6°54’N,  158°13’E)  and is a capital state of Federated States of Micronesia. The main town of Pohnpei state is Kolonia.

過去には独自の王朝も存在しましたが、16世紀にスペイン人に発見されて以来、スペインやドイツ、日本、アメリカといった国々の植民地等として支配下におかれ続けました。その後1986年に大小607の島からなるミクロネシア連邦として独立し、現在に至ります。

Although there existed as a sovereign nation, the island of Pohnpei was forced to change: Ever since a Spanish found the island, Pohnpei had been governed by Spain, Germany, Japan, and America as a colony.  But Pohnpei finally became as one of the four states of independent nation: Federated States of Micronesia.     

ポンペイ（ポナペ）にはおよそ35,000人のミクロネシア系、ポリネシア系民族が住み、米国の支配下であったことから、公用語（英語）や通貨（US$）、宗教（キリスト教）を共通にしています。
※公用語は英語ですが、通常使用されるのはポンペイ語です。
※日本統治時代にいた方は、日本語が通じることもあります。

There are approximately 35,000 people residing in Pohnpei, and the place is known as melting pot: Although Pohnpei’s ethnic diversity in Pohnpei is largely divided into Micronesian and Polynesian, many are born with different blood because of colonial history. Local Pohnpeian (or those who grew up there) use Pohnpeian language and English is used as a second language. ( few, those who have lived in Japanese time, still speak Japanese) 

透き通る海はもちろん、島全体を五角形の堡礁（珊瑚）が囲み周囲のマングローブ林とともに素晴らしい眺望のひとつになっています。
気候は年間を通して気温は23～31度、夜間に多くの雨が降り、湿度は高く保たれています。
そのため、熱帯雨林や河川が多く、最高峰のMt.ナナラウト（798m）周囲には多くの滝が有り、海だけでなく川でも遊ぶことができます。

The barrier reef largely surrounding the island protects Pohnpei from natural disaster and mangrove trees sustain the Pohnpei’s ecosystem: those create magnificent scenery.                             
The climate of Pohnpei is mostly hot with high humidity, and much rain creates waterfalls, rivers, and variety of vegetations. For example, there are many waterfalls and rivers around Mt. Nanaraut where visitors have fun.  

近年では観光業、特にエコ・ツーリズムに力を入れ始め、他に質の高い民芸品や、胡椒、ココナツ、バナナ等を主要産業としています。

Recently, the FSM government has put effort on tourism (especially eco-tourism) and major local products are handcrafts, coconuts, pepper and fish (and its commercial license).
 
例えば日本の様に外国の支配下におかれた後高度成長を遂げるのではなく、近代文化を受け入れつつ自然や伝統を守っている魅力的な国なのです。

Pohnpei has been developing by not only accepting modern culture but also keeping its tradition and nature at the same time.
